Twitter Who, What and How

Twitter has been hyped as a great marketing tool for 2009 but only a small amount of companies are using it correctly. In this article I will go through how to use Twitter for your business.

Firstly let me point out you must have a plan and goal for your Twitter account. Setting up an account because everybody else is and hoping you will get traffic will not work and can often have a negative effect. Think what is the purpose of your Twitter profile, to bring in new business, promote content or to provide a service? I always think if you wouldn’t want to visit your Twitter profile then your customers probably don’t either.

Once you have thought of a concept you will need to create your profile page. You will want to customise your profile try not to use the default settings, use your corporate colours this will show people it’s your official profile. Make sure you fill in all the details i.e. Name, description, location and URL.

Once you have created your profile you will have to promote it. Here are a few things you can do to promote your profile:
  • Site and blog: Add a link to your site or have a script which shows your latest tweets.
  • Email: Add a link to your email signature and add a link into your newsletter.
  • Communicate and discuss: Search for users who are tweeting on relevant things to your industry and get involved by replying to tweets. Make sure you reply to questions which users might ask.
  • Keep up to date: Find out what current things are happing which are relevant to your industry and make a comment or post a link to some content.
  • Follow: Follow your suppliers and industry related news and information sites.
  • Useful content: Post links to useful content and resources
  • Competitions: Try competitions, games and quizzes to entice customers.
It will be different for each company and how they would like to use Twitter but the main thing to remember is Twitter is a two way communication tool so you must listen as well as tweet.

If you have any questions or have a successful Twitter campaign I would love to hear from you at sam@zeta.net.
